Coping with mental wellness
The impact of mental illness extends to all spheres of life. Supporting a person with a mental illness requires knowledge of what they might find harmful or helpful. Mental illness often directly impacts those around the affected person.

Mental wellness: early warning signs of stress
When we experience an acute stress reaction to an extreme situation that is (or feels) life-threatening, we encounter symptoms like elevated heart rate, tightness in the chest, cold sweats or flushing, nausea or diarrhoea. The mental, emotional and behavioural focus is on fight or flight; threat and escape.

Mental wellness: Types of anxiety
We tend to use the term ‘anxiety’ for many varied kinds of feelings – all of them uncomfortable and associated with unhealthy thinking. However, there is value in knowing exactly what kind of anxiety you are dealing with. Anxieties sometimes occur together and may overlap – like panic and social anxiety, or panic and agoraphobia (the fear and avoidance of places or situations that might make you panic or feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed). They each need to be treated in their own way.

Case Study
Overview:
Managers are often expected to provide frontline support when employees approach them with their emotional and mental well-being concerns. However, many managers are underequipped to effectively serve as a source of support in this area. This case study shows what other organisations are doing to support managers with tools on what to say and do as well as what not to say or do. This helps prevent situations where the manager oversteps into the territory of mental health professionals, but ensures they can support their teams’ mental and emotional health.
