What is career well-being?
Career well-being is an important element of your overall well-being, and there are a number of steps you can take to strengthen it. First, though, you want to be clear on what we are talking about.
High career well-being is when you can give a strong ‘Yes!’ to the question, ‘Do you like what you do each day?’ (Rath, Harter 2010).
We spend the majority of our waking hours during the week doing something we consider a career, occupation, vocation, or job. When people first meet, they ask each other, “What do you do?” If your answer to that question is something you find fulfilling and meaningful, you are likely thriving in career well-being.
People usually underestimate the influence of their careers on their overall well-being. But career well-being is arguably the most essential of the seven elements of well-being. If you do not have the opportunity to regularly do something you enjoy – even if it is more of a passion or interest than something you get paid to do – the odds of your having high well-being in other areas diminish rapidly.
People with high career well-being are more than twice as likely to be thriving in their lives overall. Unfortunately, only 20% of people give a strong yes to this question. This is because they do not realise that all the well being aspects of a whole life interplay and affect one another.
Often people think that managing mental, financial, physical and community well-being will invariably address the dissatisfaction in the career well-being aspect. A Gallup study found that while 66% of the people were doing well in at least one of these areas, only 7% were thriving in all five.
In this series of articles, videos and podcasts we will endeavour to provide you with information that will assist you in attaining a richer balance as you grow in your career. We will provide guidance on answering some of the questions below
- How does career well-being affect your well-being? (self- awareness and personal resilience)
- How do I effectively navigate a hybrid working environment? (work/ life integration)
- How do I become more mindful in my everyday life? (Building and maintaining relationships)
- How do I become more deliberate in advancing my career? (Career conversations and day to day performance)

“At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favour working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts”—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak — that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

Living with purpose
Having a sense of purpose in life – something to live and strive for – is an important part of being happy, successful and productive.

This time it’s personal: Shaping the ‘new possible’ through employee experience
In an era of workplace upheaval, companies that create tailored, authentic experiences strengthen employee purpose, ignite energy, and elevate organization-wide performance.
In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, impeccably researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.” https://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Power-Introverts-World-Talking-ebook/dp/B004J4WNL2
